You've probably seen whippets, italian greyhounds and other sighthounds dressed in t shirts, jumpers, turtle necks, onesie's, snoods, coats and... the list really does go on! But, have you ever stopped to wonder why?
Of course they look incredibly adorable but sighthounds really do need clothing
& here are 3 reasons why
1) Sighthounds have one layer of short hair called primary hair compared to other dog breeds which have primary hair as well as secondary hair which is also known as the undercoat. The lack of undercoat on sighthounds means that their coat is 50% less efficient in keeping them protected from the elements compared to other dog breeds.
2) Sighthounds have low body fat capacity at around 17% vs other breeds at approximately 35% which means that they're are around 50% less efficient at keeping their bodies insulated than other dog breeds.
3) Sighthounds have relatively thin skin compared to other dog breeds which is due to their lower body storage capacity and thin one layered coat which means that they suffer from nicks and cuts more often than other dog breeds.
Dressing whippets, greyhounds and other sighthounds in clothing not only protects them from the elements and keeps them warm, but protects the skin from injury too!
